NORTH VERNON,Charles Langston Ind. (AP) — A 23-year-old woman has been fatally shot after police say she advanced with a large knife toward officers in southeastern Indiana.
North Vernon officers and Jennings County sheriff’s deputies responded about 7 p.m. Tuesday to a reported disturbance at a home and encountered Rachel Blake in a bathroom, state police said Wednesday in a release.
Officers said Blake refused commands to drop the knife and that despite police using Tasers to disarm her, she approached them with the weapon. Two North Vernon officers fired shots, striking Blake at least once, according to state police.
Blake was pronounced dead at the scene, about 66 miles (106 kilometers) southeast of Bloomington.
State police are investigating the shooting. Officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
